When you get tired of working on one, you can easily switch to the other. And best of all, the motivation to work on both is already built in! Plus, you stay on track and finish both projects in a timely manner.

Consider, for example, working on an article and a novel, or an article and a nonfiction book, or a poem and a screenplay. Moving from one project to the other should be easily accomplished and problem-free. It gets more interesting and tricky, however, if you choose to work on two novels or two nonfiction books or two screenplays simultaneously. You have to work harder to stay motivated while doing a good job with both. There is no running from one to the other for relief and inspiration. So it pays to vary the projects, whatever they are.
<script type_"text/javascript"><l--

And for me, that is just a big fat waste of my time. You know the saying, one bitten, twice shy. Well, about 9 years ago, I was bitten by someone else who had the same objective and who made similar grandiose promises: You'll get credit. You'll get interviewed on talk shows. You'll be famous.

Yeah right. In a pig's eye.

To test the latest freeloader's intentions, I offered to e-mail my price list and couldn't believe it when he requested it a few e-mails later. Before sending it, I rechecked the items and prices. My first reaction was yes! I'll do it! When would you like to get started?

But I held off for a day just to think about it. While the potential client submitted an attachment of the details of a fascinating true-life story that he had so far, I could see that there was some merit in the project. I needed to know more, such as what kind of book he really wanted to write, novel or nonfiction, and how much work he had completed so far. Also, did he want any query letters and book proposals written? And just as important, an idea of how much he budgeted for the project.

Of course, a few other matters had to be worked out, but all of that would happen later on.

If I sound cynical, it is with good reason. In one ghostwriting project for a doctor, the book's chapters needed editing and query letters had been written. And I did get some money, roughly about 4 hundred dollars for the query letters and outline. But somewhere between those query letters and book chapters, the project died on the vine. I assumed that the good doctor lost interest, since he had not communicated with me in a while. So I let that go.

In another project, the client was a female professor who was working to get tenure. In order to improve her chances, she decided to write a book for two different audiences, one audience consisted of administrators and the other consisted of teachers. So immediately, there was a problem because she had to decide which audience was best suited for the book, and she did, eventually. Then she wanted query letters written and mailed and paid me a few hundred dollars for those. And she was successful. One of the publishers we contacted expressed an interest in the book and was ready to offer a contract if ...... The professor told me that she did not have time to write those chapters and I agreed to write the first two. Unfortunately, I did not insist on an upfront fee and wound up with almost no money at all.

But I'm wiser now, letting that potential client know that I would be happy to help and would provide him with a list of services and fees. His response will clue me in as to how serious he is in getting the project started and completed in a timely manner. If he balks, well, I'll apologize, but insist on some money upfront. After all, he willingly pays his accountant, lawyer, doctor, dentist and other experts for their professional services. I'm an experienced professional too, and my time is worth money. We'll see.
<script type_"text/javascript"><l--

In addition to letting others know how you can help them meet their writing needs, consider starting a writing website. A lot of published writers have their own, and there's no reason why you shouldn't as well. A writing website enables you to get the word out to a wider audience and gives you a chance to show off your writing skills if it includes articles, stories, poems, etc. that you have written. You should also include an "About this Site" or "About Me" on one of your site's pages.

Doing this should provide quite a bit of free publicity and a few gigs as well, but like anything worthwhile, requires some work. The most important aspect is focusing your site on some aspect of writing and giving it a unique name. After all, you want your site to stand out from all of the other writing sites out there and attract more visitors. Once you've set your website up, you may wish to add other items, such as free newsletters.

And finally, remember that just because that website is up and running doesn't mean that it will automatically get visitors. You'll have to get the word out on it as well, not only by telling friends and family members, but by advertising it on your business cards and letters. You may also have to wait awhile..... very few people know about that website yet or have had a chance to visit it. This is why you have to be patient and persistent. If you give up too early, you will have denied yourself an opportunity to be profitable AND successful!
<script type_"text/javascript"><l--

If you're still attending college, for example, consider posting a sign advertising your writing services with little tabs for potential clients to take. Each tab should include the name of your service and phone number. Consider telling friends about your writing service and asking them to share that information with people they know. As you wait for clients, invest some time reading books on resume and business writing at the library and consider investing some money to buy one or more books that you can use for reference. (Buying books related to your business is a business expense that you may be able to deduct on Schedule C later on. Other examples of business expenses include office supplies, phone, and postage.)

Also contact local printers, especially any that you've already patronized, and ask them if they need help in proofreading and editing. To be sure, you'll likely get a few "no's" but that's okay. Check the Yellow Pages for other business that could use help, such as local publishers, restaurants, landscaping services, utilities, and organizations. Again, you will likely get a few "no's," but don't let them discourage you. Consider getting business cards to distribute to others as reminders of your writing services.

Remember to spread the word about your writing service to family members and encourage them to share that information with their friends and coworkers. If you persist and refuse to be discouraged, you will most definitely gain clients and grow your business! And if you have questions to ask or experiences to share, please post them here and gain another advantage: free publicity for your business!
<script type_"text/javascript"><l--

That should tell you plenty. In a recent trip, for example, I've noticed quite a few people poking about in the business book and computer sections and none in the music or photography sections. Now that doesn't mean that music and photography books aren't selling; they probably are. I wouldn't be able to make an educated guess about any of that, since music and photography aren't my things. Nor are science fiction, literature, mystery, cooking or history books. But that's only me.

And while you're at it, head for the magazine racks just to see what a small sample of people gravitate to. Doing this is easy if a coffee bar is adjacent to the magazine racks. All you have to do is bring a few books or magazines to a nearby table or better yet, invest some money in one of the overpriced coffees or snacks and you can sit around all morning, just observing people visiting the magazine racks. A few of them will buy a magazine, but a lot will pick up and leaf through several magazines and put them all back in a little while.

And the point of these observations? You need to see what attracts people and what they're buying now, as far as books are concerned. If you happen to be attracted to similar books and magazines, you just may be able to get an article or book idea. If you have some interest and work experience in writing grants or installing the latest software, for example, you may be able to develop a book that attracts attention and sales.
<script type_"text/javascript"><l--

That is, is the character's problem solved or not? Does he win the girl or not?

Honestly, all of this looks so simplistic! It is also the easy part of writing a novel, but at least it offers a destination, however vague that destination may be. The trick is to figure out what steps the character takes to solve his or her problem in order to arrive at that destination. And for any novel to "work," it should have a BIG concept. Here's an example:

I'm reading a novel by John Nance called Orbit, which has a fascinating plot line. In that novel, a pharmaceutical salesman, Kip Dawson, wins a trip to space and accepts the prize against his wife's and children's objections. So there he is, up in a rocket ship, with one other passenger, the captain of the ship. Then just as things seem to be going well, a little space object smacks into the ship and hits the captain in the head, killing him instantly. Kip finds himself alone.

Now how's that for a great concept and a page turner?

I'm sure that the author must have asked himself a "what-if" question, then figured out how his main character, Kip, solved his problem. His beginning chapter was Kip's having accepted the prize and pondering over its implications and the final chapter is....... I haven't reached it yet, but wouldn't tell you if I did. That would be giving away the story and spoiling the reading pleasure for someone who might be interested in reading Nance's novel.

But the whole idea is that the author figured out a beginning and end to his novel, then worked out the details in the middle chapters, some of which include Kip's perceptions of what is happening, the other characters' responses, his realization that his survival will depend on his efforts and so on.
<script type_"text/javascript"><l--

For example, do you dawdle a lot on a weekday or Saturday morning? Why? Until you figure out why, you won't be able to get to the root of your problem or find a way of overcoming it. Aside from personal hygiene, nutrition and work issues, how else are you spending your time?

Second key is putting a unique spin on a given idea or product. To begin, you have to narrow a wide subject, such as astronomy, into a more manageable topic. Then you should figure out what that aspect would appeal to and why. Perhaps it will appeal to more than one audience, which is great news! You will be able to milk the topic dry, putting a unique spin on it, then formatting it in an article, story, novel or nonfiction book. One way to do this is by finding a connection between two unrelated terms, such as Monopoly and relationships, then making a statement or assertion that connects them logically. Which audience will really pay attention to that statement?
<script type_"text/javascript"><l--

If you had to do those things all over again, would you or could you? What did you learn along the way? What would you have done differently? What mistakes did you make? Could you have found ways to avoid them? What do you consider yourself knowledgeable about and why?

Brainstorm other questions and answer them.

Remember that if you experienced pleasure or problems, someone else may be very interested in learning about them and how you coped.

There are countless ideas in everyday activities, but the problem is, a lot of us assume that others would not be interested or that others would be bored in hearing about them. Don't give in to those assumptions! After all, there is no one else quite like you. No one's perspective is exactly like yours! You have a lot of material to work with. Write about what you feel most enthusiastic about one way or the other and prosper!
<script type_"text/javascript"><l--

You see your filler and name in print in the next issue. Once the excitement of seeing your name and work in print is over, you're done as far as the filler is concerned.

Writing fillers probably involves more time and effort than articles and books. It's true. First you have to come up with a good twist or spin or story or poem, then you have to keep submitting it until it finds a home. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that the filler will ever find a home and when it does, you won't get enough money to make it worthwhile. Try your hand writing articles or books first. The payoff in terms of money and potential fame are greater.

You're limited to existing markets --- if you can find them. Even in well-known magazines that feature such items, you literally have to spend time looking for fillers than articles. Once you find them, you read and forget them, along with the name of the author. Can you honestly state that you remember who wrote the last filler that you read?

Do yourself and your bank account a favor --- focus your efforts on writing articles and books.
<script type_"text/javascript"><l--

Those magazines regularly published good, practical "meaty" articles that I sometimes clipped and saved for future reference. I still have quite a stack of older copies sitting in a large cardboard carton in the basement.

Anyway, those magazines have changed and not always in a good way. For example, they both have more ads and fewer meaty articles. They both cost more. I have since discontinued my subscriptions to them, although I will still read copies at the library and occasionally borrow one or two copies to read at home.

My point is that while both of these magazines are useful overall, they still have a ways to go in making themselves valuable to writers. They could feature more articles, for starters. And a few of those articles could focus on topics of interest to experienced writers. And finally, the caveat, buyer beware, applies. If possible, read a few copies at the library and then decide for yourself whether you'd like to subscribe.
<script type_"text/javascript"><l--

All you have to do is take an inventory of subjects/topics that you know about (or are interested in) and enjoy. For example, do you have a hobby? Are you interested in some aspect of health or yoga or online gambling? Do you have expertise as a result of formal training and related work experience? Could some of this be used to help inform, entertain, or solve problems for others?

At the same time, keep your audience in mind and become familiar with their questions and problems. What ebook, for example, have you produced that can help them address those issues? Does your information product answer their questions, expand their knowledge, entertain them, for example?
<script type_"text/javascript"><l--

What do these readers get in return? A drawing for a car, for example? A momento of some kind? A free subscription to a publication that they love? That item should be something tangible, some kind of evidence that the person has donated money and has made a difference.

That letter should establish an urgency as well. Why give today rather than tomorrow or next month or next year? What will happen if no donations are forthcoming and how will that situation eventually affect the letter's readers?

Getting the words down shouldn't be too difficult if you put yourself in your reader's place and pretend that the letter is addressed to you. In fact, you could write your name after the word "Dear" and convince yourself in writing why you should donate money to such a worthy cause. Since this is a rough draft, the important thing is to get the words down and allowing some time for the draft to cool off. The next time you read that draft, pretend that someone else wrote that letter. Does that letter motivate you to give money to the charity? If not, why not? What sentences and paragraphs ring a hollow note? How should they be revised?

If this sounds like a lot of work, well, it is, especially if you have never done something like this before. Writing such letters is a skill that could help you to earn bigger bucks. It's shorter than an article and way shorter than a book project. Plus, it may yield great results sooner rather than later. So, get ready, set.....and write!
<script type_"text/javascript"><l--

They are more professional, overall. They issue contracts and let you know, upfront, how much money that your work will earn.

On the other hand, individuals and a lot of newer publications can be finicky. Quite a few of them don't know exactly what they want and/or don't know what they want and are unable to communicate their expectations clearly. Or they may know what they want and present their expectations fairly well, but are rather cheap and expect you to carry the load.

You, as a writer, should not be expected to do more than your share. If you are, then run, don't walk, to a publisher or company that will treat you fairly and deal with you in a professional manner.

Having said that, here is a short list of what to avoid:

- term paper mills, for low pay and expected turnaround that only Superman could accomplish. Not worth your time and effort.
- individuals, for low-paid ghostwriting services. Tend to expect a full package of services for low pay. Not worth your time and effort.
- little-known magazines and publishers, who tend to offer low pay, or pay in copies of their publications. Such returns will not help to pay bills, or even defray the cost of bills overall.
- organizations and publishers that post a "job" for one writer. The odds are against you in such cattle calls. The probability is that you will not be chosen and that your work will be used. Run, don't walk, from such cattle calls.
- writing for free. You may get writing "credits," but no thanks and no money and no references. Doctors, dentists, accountants and veterinarians are examples of professionals who do not render their services for free and neither should you.
<script type_"text/javascript"><l--

To be sure, many of these writers are avid readers of magazines and newspapers, and if there is time, a few books. But still, having something to write about eludes them.

Not for long, however, if these writers extend their search for something to write about. This search would include blogs and forums. Posts which seem to take up the most space and involve replies just may suggest what is attracting attention for a few people anyway. Examples of such posts include solutions to problems, attempts to seek solutions, newsy items on trends, and so on.

A possible strategy for mining these posts is to first focus on subjects that catch your attention --- and keep it. Make a list of those items. Later on, look at that list and brainstorm angles and questions for each item of interest. Also consider who would be interested and why (audience). What should have been said? What has been repeated too often? Has it been stated elsewhere and if so, where? Who was the audience? Did it appear in an article or book or journal? And finally, settle on one of those items and analyze it by answering the questions. Can you add a new twist? If not, continue this process with the remaining items. In the meantime, hold on to your notes, just in case you see a similar topic appear in a magazine or newspaper. Who knows? You just may be on to a developing trend!!!
<script type_"text/javascript"><l--

Did the book seem to have good information in its chapters? Did it have explanations for things that you've wondered about? Provide practical help for staying healthy, making more money, winning online poker, finding a good bargain in buying or selling a home or car, eating better, exercising?

The book that you picked up and leafed through was beneficial in some way. It satisfied a need.

So, as you brainstorm ideas for articles and books, ask yourself what reader need or needs they satisfy and what specific audience would benefit. Once you have that, you can and should add a twist, such as "being rich isn't all that it's cracked up to be." Then tailor your article's or book's contents to that perspective and its audience.

Also, pretend that you're an editor and ask yourself if you would commit some money to purchasing a given book.

Be honest. Think about your answers. If possible, communicate with your intended audience. Then commit yourself to your project. Think about it. If you write frequently, you've researched, proofread, copyedited, and drafted. Perhaps you're multi-talented and possess an expertise in the arts. There are so many possibilities!

The biggest question that many novice writers ask is, "How do I start?"

Your phonebook's Yellow Pages: Find local publishers, companies, associations, print shops and write down names of potential clients, along with their phone numbers. Begin with a list of ten such places, then call each of them, letting them know that you can help with proofreading, copyediting, indexing, or writing. Not everyone will say "yes," of course, but maybe one or two or three will! Following this strategy helped me to land a temporary proofreading position with a local publisher. This publisher administered a test, which I passed.

Contact local businesses: Visit the local flower shop, restaurant, bookstore and let them know that you are available to help them write flyers, proofread, and/or edit. Again, a lot of places will respond with a polite "no thanks," but that's okay.

Contact local charities: Let these charities know that you are available to help write letters and other materials, proofread or edit. Even if you donate your services, you will gain valuable experience and perhaps a few samples for your portfolio.

Contact agencies: Let them know that you are a writer who can also proofread, research, index and/or edit. These agencies will probably ask you to take a short test before discussing opportunities with you.

Contact large publishers: Same advice follows. However, instead of using the phone this time, write a letter that briefly describes your qualifications. Also, if you have expertise in areas such as business subjects, teaching or technology, mention that as well. You may be able to land a temporary gig as a copywriter or project editor!

Keep careful track of who you contacted and when.... and be prepared to wait a little while, especially the large publishers. It takes time for your letter to reach the right person and for that person to read and contact you. For example, several months elapsed before Addison-Wesley responded with a short-term project that involved editing, writing and research, but it was worth the wait.

And finally, to better the odds of landing a temporary gig, contact a few places every day via phone or letter. And don't give up easily!
<script type_"text/javascript"><l--

So today, without further ado, I've included a list of writing reference books for fiction:

Writing the Novel by Lawrence Block (Writer's Digest Books).

Writing Novels That Sell by Jack M. Bickham (Simon & Schuster, Inc.).

Writing the Breakout Novel by Donald Maass (Writer's Digest Books).

Story Structure Architect by Victoria Lynn Schmidt (Writer's Digest Books).

No Plot, No Problem by Chris Baty (Chronicle Books).

So You Want to Write a Novel by Lou Willett Stanek (Avon Books).

The First Five Pages by Noah Lukeman (Simon & Schuster).

I own all of the nonfiction and fiction books listed and have found that every one of those books has at least one good idea. Also, it's not possible, at least for me, to find everything that I need and want in a single writing reference. It's probably a good idea to visit a bookstore and see what's available, page through a few writing reference books before committing any money.
<script type_"text/javascript"><l--

Jacobs, from the library, that I began my career in earnest. I needed to know how to begin and how to write query letters, as well as having some reassurance that I could be published eventually. Hayes' book gave me that information, step by step, which I followed and succeeded in getting my words into print.

To be sure, this didn't happen right away. My first query letter, for example, intrigued an editor enough to reply in the affirmative. "Yes, please send us your article." And I did. But in my haste to send it, I didn't pay too much attention to content and wound up submitting a half-baked, one-page article, which was promptly rejected. I learned from that experience and submitted another article to another magazine. This article was accepted for publication and earned me a grand sum of seventy-five dollars.

Anyway, the moral is "never give up," which also applies to finding suitable writing references at the library and/or bookstore. Believe me when I say that regardless of what you are interested in writing, there is no such thing as one reference book "fitting all." A lot depends on not only what you wish to write, but your writing skills and persistence. If you give up too easily, no book, magazine or class will help you. Also remember that you shouldn't buy any book unless you are absolutely sure that you intend to use at least some of its suggestions and strategies. Otherwise, save your money for one or more books that will work effectively for you.

Here are a few books to consider:

How to Write Irresistable Query Letters by Lisa Collier Cool (Writer's Digest Books, 1987).

Writing for Money by Loriann Hoff Oberlin (Writer's Digest Books, 1994).

How to Write Books That Sell by L. Perry Wilbur and Jon Samsel (Allworth Press, 1998).

Handbook of Magazine Article Writing by Jean M. Fredette (ed); (Writer's Digest Books, 1988).

Manuscript Submission by Scott Edelstein (Writer's Digest Books, 1989).

How to Write and Sell Greeting Cards, Bumper Stickers, T-Shirts and Other Fun Stuff by Molly Wigand (Writer's Digest Books, 1992).

The Shortest Distance Between You and a Published Book: 20 Steps to Success by Susan Page (Broadway Books, 1997).

Tomorrow, I will include a list of books on fiction writing and if anyone asks, more books on writing and selling nonfiction. Cheers!!!
<script type_"text/javascript"><l--

So plan now to pay attention to them. Do this by describing what happened, who else was there, what you did and how you felt. If this event was a wedding, for example, and you were put in charge of finding the perfect caterer, explain in writing how you did it, along with the problems you encountered and the results. Also feel free to include other details, such as the weather, name of church/synagogue/temple and what happened during and after that time.

Finding a market for a wedding-related article shouldn't be too difficult. Suitable markets, such as Brides magazine, are listed in the Writer's Market, along with instructions for submitting and payment details. And since you had that experience and dealt with it effectively, you are already an expert with some valuable information to share.

Other examples of events include a new baby, death in the family, birthday party, admission to a good school, a firing, a new business that you or someone else started, an unusual vacation, a new pet, a home-improvement project, a special relationship, a weather-related event, your new home or apartment.......the list goes on, but I think that you get the idea.

One last suggestion: always date your material and hold on to it, even if it doesn't seem to have much potential right now. You'll be glad that you did! And feel free to share your experience(s) here.
<script type_"text/javascript"><l--

Of course, I still wind up buying anywhere from two to six books per visit and hope that I can read them all. But that is beside the point. The point I'm trying to make is that even a single visit to a bookstore will likely inspire a new or experienced writer to write.

First, there are a number of new and established magazines whose cover headlines invite a casual observer to pick them up and take a peek. So accept the invitation and pick up one or more magazines and satisfy your curiosity. Did you find what you were looking for, or not? If not, why not? Was there something else that the writer could have included or explained in more detail? If so, could you explain, perhaps to a different audience? Consider taking a few quick notes on the store's flyers or napkins while your memory is fresh. Jot down enough so that later on, you will be able to pick up wherever you left off.

Secondly, there are the books themselves. For many potential customers, a stroll down a specific aisle, say, reference, is all that is needed. Or perhaps a quick tour of the music department or the racks that hold everything from newest paperbacks to calendars and greeting cards. However, a writer continues his or her journey and wanders among other stacks of books as well, including children's books, business and computer books, fiction, latest bestsellers --- the list goes on. During that time, a writer pays attention to titles that grab his or her attention and even picks up a book or two in order to examine its table of contents, and replaces that book or holds on to it for later purchase.

Even better, a writer considers noting several titles that really grabbed his or her attention for later reference, along with quick notes or ideas for other titles or books.

By the time a writer is ready to leave, he or she will have gathered up a number of golden gems/idea nuggets to review and work with at home. Maybe that person's muse is awakened, inspired and ready to roll, as there is plenty of food for thought and ideas to mine.
<script type_"text/javascript"><l--

After all, that is a great way to broaden one's horizons and find ideas. But the problem for many writers is how to do this.

The answer is simple: keep track of your reading.

Okay, visualize yourself reading a newspaper. You do not read everything, of course. As you scan given pages, you are likely to find at least one article that interests you and read it. That's the first step. At the same time, it is important to keep track of what you read in the paper. You can do this by remembering what you read and where, or go back and take notes, usually article title and page number, and write it down. You should also clip these articles.

Once you've done this, review your results. Are the selected articles related to a single subject, such as taxes? Why did you read them? And equally important, what stood out to you in each article? Was it a quote? A fact? Can you establish a connection between one or both of these and your own personal experiences? Have you reached a conclusion about something? What is it? Can you develop that conclusion or main point with other research into an article?

Another important thing to remember is to try to do these things while the articles' ideas and your ideas are still fresh in your mind. You will be able to find and develop ideas more effectively.

At the same time, it is very tempting to merely clip one or more articles and place them in a folder (or two) and store everything in a pile of papers or in a drawer. TRY TO AVOID THIS! Giving in to that temptation makes it so much easier to give in the next time and the time after that. Pretty soon, you'll wind up with a stack of folders and articles that you really do not feel like mining for ideas. And no wonder! You feel overwhelmed by it all, and who can blame you? Plus, you wind up with a lot of clutter that will not be so easy to clean up later. So it's in your best interest as a writer to deal with each article separately and immediately.

Consider organizing your folder or folders a bit more. In other words, clip or staple your notes to a given article and place it in a folder that you have labeled, such as "saving on taxes." When you have more time later on, you will be ready to develop your article or nonfiction book or whathaveyou. You'll also feel more motivated to write and use your time productively.
<script type_"text/javascript"><l--

It seemed that just as you got ready to write, something happened. Maybe you landed a new job or got sick or had to deal with a crisis at home and put writing on the backburner. Hey, it happens!

In the meantime, you haven't lost your intentions of writing --- just have to overcome a little procrastination.

Try luring your muse the round-a-bout way. That is, go to the library and browse through writing magazines such as the Writer and Writer's Digest. You will find articles and a lot of inspiration. Try entering one or more writing contests, just to get your feet wet. You'll be writing and even better, awakening the muse as you produce small pieces. This has worked for me. Quite a few years ago, I entered a small Writer's Digest contest on a book that I read. After mailing my entry, I forgot about it until Writer's Digest notified me that I had won a book of my choice!

And while you're at the library, by the way, be sure to browse the stacks of books. Look at titles of a LOT of books, even if their subjects don't particular interest you. And definitely pick up a book whose title intrigues you and check out its table of contents. Did the items match your expectations or not? What else could the author have included? Could you have written a better book?

Another way to inspire your writing muse is by perusing the editorials in your local paper and/or one of the big national papers such as the New York Times. Choose a letter that gets your blood boiling or makes you laugh or cry --- and answer it in a journal entry.
<script type_"text/javascript"><l--

If you read it more closely, however, you are likely to notice sentences and paragraphs that might have been explained a bit further. However, doing that in a single article might not have been such a great idea, as the article's focus might have been ruined.

So why not expand or recycle that single sentence or paragraph into another article? It can be done, only with less hassle. Rewrite that sentence or paragraph on a clean sheet of paper and brainstorm it. Make a list of items that would directly support, develop and explain it. Also consider adapting it to a different audience. Right away, you have new possibilities! You may have to complete some research, but your time would be well spent.

For example, if you completed one article on gardening or cats or astronomy, why not write a series of articles on that topic? After all, you are an expert on it and have so much to share.

But we're not through with "milking" articles yet. If you have carefully completed ten-plus articles, why not build a nonfiction book from them? You'd have to group articles under a title that you've brainstormed and describes them overall. It can be done! Another option is using bits of material from all of your articles in a book. That can also be done, and I should know. My book, Teaching Ideas for the Come-Alive Classroom (Parker Pub. Co./Prentice-Hall) was the result of my article-writing efforts.
<script type_"text/javascript"><l--

Besides, how many times have you saw an article in a magazine and thought, I could have written that! And yes, you certainly could have and definitely should have. I can't even tell you how many times I've seen articles in Instructor, a professional magazine for elementary teachers, and thought the same thing. Yet, I didn't spring into action like I should have. Had I done so, I would have been earning money and gaining some recognition in my field.

The whole problem was that I procrastinated and allowed negative thoughts, such as me, get published? Dream on!

So, if you have procrastinated and harbored similar thoughts, STOP, and start writing!!!

And I mean it literally!

Pick up a magazine that you subscribe to or read regularly and start brainstorming 10 article titles for that magazine! Don't worry about what they sound or look like! Don't spend a lot of time or lift your pen from the paper. Just keep going until you have ten working, tentative titles.
Then stop.

It may be difficult to stop, but do it anyway. Put the list down and pick it up tomorrow and look at it again.

When you do look at that list again, look at it from that magazine reader's eyes. Which article would you read first? Second, third, and so forth? Number the titles. Cross out any that you would not consider reading at all, for whatever reason.

Now focus on the top three choices and decide what you would like to work on first. On another sheet of paper, make a list of things that you would like to say. Then arrange this list in a logical sequence. Next, rewrite the first item on your list and jot down facts and/or opinions to support it. Do the same thing for the following items. When you have finished, you will have completed a rough outline of your article.

As you work, think about what makes this article different from others you have read and why it would attract readers' attention. For example, does it include practical solutions for a common problem, such as cleaning the house, getting a new job, getting rich, staying safe, decorating a room, learning a new sport, etc.? Have you had similar experiences and found something that works for you and wish to share it? Or have you ever wondered about how something like gardens began or why something happens the way it does, without fail? Chances are good that others have wondered about the same things and would be very interested in reading your article!

Now, do you write the article first and send it to the magazine's editor?

No. What you do instead is write a letter to the editor, giving the article's working title and two or three of its highlights and explaining why you should be selected to write the article. Maybe you've had a lot of experience in that subject or a longstanding interest and have done a lot of research on it. Also, you may have related credentials and/or other articles published elsewhere. If you haven't, don't worry about it. Just focus on your experience(s) and expertise. And remember to send a stamped, self-addressed envelope for the editor's reply.

While you wait for that reply, work on your article, or better yet, develop other article ideas and consider tailoring them to other audiences and other magazines. Keep going. Don't stop now. Instead, get another query written and mailed this week. Before long, you will have heard from the first magazine. And good luck!
<script type_"text/javascript"><l--
