Give 'em what they want by mining blogs and forums
Part of the reason why writers experience difficulties in finding something to write about is that they are really unaware of items that interest their potential readers. To be sure, many of these writers are avid readers of magazines and newspapers, and if there is time, a few books. But still, having something to write about eludes them.
Not for long, however, if these writers extend their search for something to write about. This search would include blogs and forums. Posts which seem to take up the most space and involve replies just may suggest what is attracting attention for a few people anyway. Examples of such posts include solutions to problems, attempts to seek solutions, newsy items on trends, and so on.
A possible strategy for mining these posts is to first focus on subjects that catch your attention --- and keep it. Make a list of those items. Later on, look at that list and brainstorm angles and questions for each item of interest. Also consider who would be interested and why (audience). What should have been said? What has been repeated too often? Has it been stated elsewhere and if so, where? Who was the audience? Did it appear in an article or book or journal? And finally, settle on one of those items and analyze it by answering the questions. Can you add a new twist? If not, continue this process with the remaining items. In the meantime, hold on to your notes, just in case you see a similar topic appear in a magazine or newspaper. Who knows? You just may be on to a developing trend!!!
